Frequently Asked Questions
What are your rates?
My rates vary slightly from job to job — after I review your sample, I’ll let you know of my specific rate for your work. I typically charge $50/hour, or $60/hour on Upwork to account for the platform’s fee structure. If you prefer a price-per-word model, I will develop a price after I review an accurate average sample of your work. We can discuss which method of payment will work best for our partnership.
What factors influence your proposed rate?
- I base my prices on those which are averaged by the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA). You may find their more specific explanations here.
- That said, it’s important to acknowledge that not all editing is created equal, and the starting point should never determine the quality of the final deliverable. The subject matter, particular process request, and timeline are some factors that I consider when developing my proposed rate. Content branding, search engine-optimization (SEO) requirements, and fact-checking may also become factors, depending on your needs.
- As a copyeditor and proofreader, it’s my job to make your work the best it can be. Sometimes, a piece requires a bit more effort to find its flow. I never want to produce a deliverable with which I’m not totally satisfied. The price I propose will enable me to give your project the energy it deserves.
What software do you use?
I typically use Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides), and Adobe Acrobat, but I am open to learning new software at client request. I’m also glad to collaborate with your copy team via Slack, Salesforce, Asana, or any work management platform your team might use.
What are your working hours?
I answer direct messages or emails from clients during all waking hours. My workdays and hours of operation vary because my schedule is built around my clients’ needs.
Regarding deliverables, I will always discuss expected turnaround times or, on larger projects, milestone deadlines. Communication is key in every working relationship, so I will always keep you in the loop as needed. I reserve the right to dictate my own schedule, but as long as we keep the lines of communication open (as I am known to do!), it should never become an issue.
What kind of editing do you do?
There are many types of editing, but I am a copyeditor and proofreader. See these explanations given by the Editorial Freelancers Association:
-
- “The role of the copyeditor is as broad as it is important. Copyeditors correct spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation, check cross-references, and prepare the style sheets that guide consistency and accuracy across the manuscript.”
-
- “Proofreaders check the text for errors, including typographical errors and problems with typesetting specifications and page makeup. They compare the latest stage of the project to earlier stages and make sure changes have been made correctly.”
Do you offer free samples of your work?
Following a discussion about the particulars of your project (via email or video chat), I will be happy to provide between one and three pages’ worth of edits as a free sample (i.e., between 350 and 1,000 words). After that, I kindly request to be paid my hourly rate for the remainder of the sample.
